Vellottukurissi Ayyappan Kavu Temple

History

Vellottukurissi Ayyappan Kavu, situated in Cherpulassery, Palakkad district, is a revered temple dedicated to Lord Ayyappa. Renowned for promoting communal harmony, it welcomes devotees of all castes and religions. Though the exact date of its origin is unknown, it is widely believed to be of great antiquity and holds deep historical significance. Often called the “Women’s Sabarimala” and “Malabar’s Sabarimala”, the temple’s origin is linked to a local legend. It is said that a Cherumi couple once discovered a divine rock which began to bleed when struck, prompting the creation of a small Kavu (sacred grove) around it. Over the years, the temple has been renovated most more notably in 1964 with the installation of a Panchaloham (five-metal alloy) idol of Lord Ayyappa, and again in 2003 with a complete reconstruction. The temple’s grand ten-day Pooram festival, held in the Malayalam month of Kumbham, features Theeyattu (a traditional temple art), Kalam Paattu, and concludes with the Aarattu ritual on the 10th day (Uthram). It also serves as an important starting point for devotees to don the sacred Ayyappa mala and commence their pilgrimage to Sabarimala, especially during the Mandala season (November–January). Vellottukurissi Ayyappan Kavu is also regarded as a cultural and spiritual learning centre, playing a role in literacy initiation, particularly after the study of the Vedas, Vedanta, and Upanishads.
