Kuttemperoor Sree Karthyayini Devi Temple

History

This ancient temple of Sree Karthyayani is believed to have been worshipped by Kroshtamuni during Kritha Yugam. The temple is situated in beautiful and peaceful surroundings facing east, on the western bank of a river connecting Achancoil with Pamba. The temple is about 2.5 km east of Thiruvalla - Mavelikkara PWD road via Koikkkal junction or Puthuvilapady junction, in Kuttemperoor, Mannar Panchayath, Chengannur in Alappuzha District. The legend is that a venerable saint after consecrating Thrikuratty Temple, Mannar searched for a calm and peaceful place to spend the remainder of his life in meditation. He reached the place where the Karthyayani temple is now situated and spent more time worshipping his beloved Goddess Sree Karthyayani. Realising his end was not too far he secured the idol in a stone chamber and covered it with a stone. Thereafter the Muni attained Samadhi, the spot he sat in meditation and attained bliss is considered sacred and worshipped even now. This place became known as Kroshtapuram which was later on shortened as Kuttemperoor. After many centuries people of the village while collecting firewood discovered the stone chamber and felt the presence of some divine power. News of the discovery was conveyed to Naduvazhy at Pazhoormana, Moovattupuzha. Pazhoor Thampuran after consulting with an astrologer arranged for the proper installation of the idol. The ceremony was performed by Thazhamon Thanthri on Vrischika Karthika day. Naduvazhy entrusted the administration of the temple to a few important men and gave Santhi to Veloor Illam and Kazhkam to the Variyathu family. Quarrels started among the members of the temple administration and Warrier took the opportunity to gain more power and wrested control of the temple. These developments made the Naduvazhy very sad and he cursed the people and never visited the place again. Warrier became powerful and influential. Kuttemperoor and Mannar formed part of the Kayamkulam ruler, which was later annexed by Marthanda Varma Maharaja of the Travancore Royal family. Warrier seized this opportunity and met Marthanda Varma Raja and informed him of the temple. Variyathu Family was declared Janmi of the Village and bestowed with ownership of the Temple and landed properties. The idol of the principal deity Sree Karthyayani is said to be made up of a mixture of various materials, which is a rare one. The existing temple building was set to be reconstructed about 400 years above in place of the ancient temple which stood for 500 years. The sanctum sanctorum of the principal deity is circular in construction having a perimeter of 25 meters, walls adorned with stone sculptures in the basement and superstructure adorned with hundreds of intricately carved sculptures depicting stories from mythology making the temple unique. Roofing is with copper sheets ceilings of the Mugha Mandapam and Balikkal Pura are also decorated with beautiful wooden sculptures. Besides the main deity, Sree Ganapathy, Lord Shiva, Sree Ayyappan, Serpent gods, and Brahma Rakshas are also worshipped. Due to mismanagement by Variyathu Family, the temple was neglected and poojas and rituals were not conducted properly. From 1950 to 1975 conditions deteriorated. The public intervened at this stage and formed Kuttemperoor Devaswom Samithy (Reg No. 69/1975) under the Societies Act 1955. Discussions were held with the Variyathu family and it was agreed for the transfer of the temple with surrounding properties to the Kuttemperoor Devaswom Samithy. The transfer of the temple took place on the 22nd of October 1975.
