Mavelikara Maruthakshi Devi Temple

History

About a hundred years ago, Mahatma Ayyankali visited Mavelikkara in Alapuzha district. The desire to have a temple there was conveyed to him, and the land bought for the Sadhu Jana Pariplanan Sangham was shown as a suitable site for it. Sri. Ayyankali planted a banyan tree there and asked for the temple to be built in the remaining area. One man who was proficient in magical and Tantric rites, living in Mavelikkara at that time, came forward to build the temple. He built a small temple. Kodungaloor Bhagavathy was invoked and consecrated in this temple. Later, the Pulaya community in Mavelikkara formed seven groups more and took up the responsibility of the temple. They expanded the temple and consecrated subordinate deities like Maruthakshi Amma, Ganapathy, Siva, Bhuvaneswari Amma, Bala Murugan, Nagaraja, Nagayakshy and Maha Vishnu in separate temples. They also built the platform for the serpents. The person who first built the temple was also consecrated under the name of Appooppan. It became customary for the devotees to first approach Appooppan with their grievances and needs upon coming to the temple. This was then announced by the temple priest. This is followed in all offerings performed here, like offering cocks, Guruthy, Thali, silken clothes for the Goddess, Kolam and Inakkam Pinakkam. Before any offerings are made, it is mandatory to offer toddy, betal leaf and money to Appooppan and have the priest speak aloud the intention behind the offering and get the blessing of the Devi. The members of the seven groups have the right to become priests in this temple. There are no rituals offered by brahmins. On the day of star Uthradam in the Malayalam month of Makaram, the day of the Goddess, offerings like Maha Ganapathy Homam, Kalasha puja, and Pongala are performed. On that day, the Chief Priest, Thanthri, who performed the consecration, offered pujas. The festival is celebrated on the day of the star Aswathy in the Malayalam month of Kumbham.  On that day, Kettukazcha is brought to the temple from various groups. Kolam thullal is also done for those who have offered that. For seven days from the first of January, the Goddess is taken out to the seven areas for offering para.
