This temple is located in Marathakkad, on the banks of the Kuppam River, approximately half a kilometre from the Thaliparamba Temple in Kannur District. When it was feared that the emerald, which was found here, would be stolen by the foreigners, Karissery Thanthri took the lead in giving it to the Rajarajeswara temple and then it was put in the well, and the well was covered up. According to legends, Sree Parvathy and Parameswara came to the Thulur forest as lions. They had five children there named as Kandapuli, Marapuli, Puli Maran, Kaalapuli, and Puliyoor Kali. The hungry lion cubs went to
more the cattle shed of the local chieftain and ate the calves. The ruler ordered the lion cubs to be killed. But the man employed to do it was killed. The ruler realised the divine nature of the cubs and gave them a place on the right of Thuloor Vanath Bhagavathy. When the eldest member of the Kariyath family came to worship there, the cubs left with him on his palm leaf umbrella. Later, they were consecrated at Ivar. In the main sanctum, Pulloor Kali, Pullikarinkali, Puli Kantan, Puli Maran, Puliyoor Kannan, Kalapuli, Kantapuli, Maarapuli and Karinthiri Nair are worshipped.
