Pookkattikara Karamukku Bhagavathy Temple

History

Located about a kilometre from Kanimangalam Valiyalukkal on the Thrissur - Irinjalakuda road, this ancient temple complex consists of the Pookkattikkara Shiva Temple and Karamukku Bhagavathy Temple. Set amidst lush paddy fields and adjacent to the 2-acre Karamukku pond, the temple is a revered site believed to be one of the 108 Durga temples established by Lord Parasurama. According to legend, Sage Khara meditated by the temple pond and was blessed with a Swayambhoo idol of Lord Shiva, later also installing Lord Vishnu. The temple has strong mythological and historical associations, including connections with Sakthan Thampuran. Originally maintained by prominent Namboothiri families, the temple came under the more Cochin State and is now managed by Ashokeswaram Devaswom. The twin sanctums (double Vatta Sreekovils) and the architecture reflect similarities to the famed Vadakkumnathan Temple in Thrissur.
