Mahadeva Temple is situated about half a kilometre east of the MC Road. The route from Koothattukulam to Muvattupuzha–Thodupuzha runs close to the temple, making it easily accessible. This is one of the prominent Shiva temples in central Kerala, housing a rare Swayambhu (self-manifested) idol of Lord Shiva and Parvati, accompanied by deities Ganapathy and Subrahmanya. The temple is believed to be over a thousand years old and is associated with a local legend that also explains the origin of the name Koothattukulam. The temple is renowned for its intricate carvings and vibrant murals. Notably, the entire Ramayana is depicted in sculptural form on the Balikkalpura (sacrificial
more altar structure), making it a site of immense cultural and artistic significance. The temple stands as a testament to the region’s rich spiritual heritage and architectural brilliance.
