Kattuvallil Ayyappa Temple

History

This temple is located in Thattarambalam, Mavelikkara, Alappuzha district. The Kattuvallil temple is hundreds of years old. The origin of this temple is connected with a Brahmin. Hundreds of years ago, the Chirakkal King brought some Brahmins from Gokarnam to perform pujas in the temples.  Among them, one family came to Kottuvally. Shukapuram Gramam and Panniyoor Gramam were local powers in the north. When Vellatttiri and Samoothiri fought wars, peaceful life became impossible for the people.  Some of the Namboothiris migrated to the southern areas. Some of them came to Kattuvally and consecrated the Dharmashasthav there. This incarnation was fondly more addressed as Manikandan. Later, it was called Swami Ayyappan.  Manikandan functioned as a king, but Ayyappan left the material world and immersed himself in the spiritual world. The Lord was consecrated above the climbers in the kavu, overgrown with citrus climbers. Hence, it came to be known as Naranga vallikkavu. This later became Kattuvalli. This has been mentioned as the 65th kavu in the Ayyappan Theeyattu Thottam Pattu. Later, under the influence of the Aryans, the kavu became a temple. According to the older generation, this area had a lot of ponds and groves. That must be how it got the name Kattuvallikavu. The stone idol is believed to be thousands of years old. It has a square sanctum roofed with copper plates. The idol is unique with the pot in the right hand. The right leg is folded while the left leg is on the platform. The sanctum faces the east.  Inside the sanctum on the southern side, Ganapathy is consecrated. The serpents are consecrated on a platform. Nagayakshiyamma, Rakshass Yakshi and Siva are also consecrated.  All the parts of a big temple are seen here. There is a huge compound where there is a stage for the performance of art forms. There are three pujas and Shiveli. The annual festival is in the month of Makaram from the star Karthika to Uthram. Aaraatt is in the temple pond.  Makara Samkramam is celebrated with importance. Sapthaha yajnam and the pakalpooram conducted here are also very famous. Near the place where the Kattuvalli temple stands today was the family of Parattethth. The eldest member of this family led the others in building the temple.  The men of this family were the commanders-in-chief of the Kayamkulam king, and they established a Kalari on the northern side of the temple. At one time, there was a scarcity of money for the daily expenses of the temple. Some of the families in the houses nearby took up the responsibility of maintaining the temple. The temple is now under the Travancore Devaswom Board and became a major temple in 1955.  Till 1979, members of the Valakkott illam performed the rituals here. Later, the Devaswom board started appointing the priests.
