Thathappilly Sree Durga Temple

History

This temple is at Karingamthuruth, North Paravoor in Ernakulam district. There is a legend about the origin of the temple. Once Vezhaparambil Namboothiri and Mavelipuram Namboothiri were on their way back after some rituals. They came to the pond situated at the place where the temple stands today. As they were taking a bath there, they felt a divine presence in the area. As they were coming out of the pond, they saw the footprint of a young girl there. Vezhaparambil Namboothiri understood that it was that of Yoga Maya, Durga Devi. He gave some grains he had with him to Mavelipuram Namboothiri and asked him more to prepare a nivedyam for the Goddess. Then Vezhaparambil Namboothiri performed poojas and consecrated the Devi there, and Mavelipuram Namboothiri offered the pounded grains to the Goddess. As the Goddess here is imagined to be a small girl, she is put to sleep outside the temple. After the last pooja, the Goddess will be taken to the Pattupura outside. In the morning, the Goddess will be taken back to the sanctum. Inside the sanctum, two guards stand serving the goddess. This temple was destroyed during the attack by the forces of Tippu Sultan. Some of the damage caused can still be seen there. The temple was taken over by the Devaswom Board, and the structure was reconstructed. In the beginning, the goddess was consecrated on a stone platform. Now, special pujas are offered to the Goddess who is brought to this stone during the Pooram celebrations.
