This temple is at Payyannur in Kannur district. Legend says that the place where the temple stands today was known as Udayagiri in ancient times, and the effulgence of Lord Siva was present there. Once Vilwamangalam Swamiyar, a saint and a renowned devotee of Lord Krishna, came to this place at dusk. When he could not find any water to wash himself before prayers, he prayed to Lord Krishna. He appeared as a young boy and pressed his foot on the mountain. There appeared a pond with water at that spot. When Vilwamangalam Swamiyar was unsure about the purity of the water, the Lord showed him
more fish living safely in it. The mark of the Lord’s foot can still be seen at the bottom of the pond. As the pond with fish was created by the Lord, it came to be referred to as Meenkulam. Vilwamangalam Swamiyar consecrated Sree Krishna on the rock where he had appeared before him. This temple came to be known as Meenkulam temple.
