Sree Bhagavathy Ali Chamundi Temple

History

Situated in Arikady, Kasaragod district, the Sree Bhagavathy Ali Chamundi Temple, also known as Arikkady Parasthanam Bhagavathy Ali Chamundi Temple, is a unique and ancient shrine, believed to be over 800 years old. The presiding deity is Chammundi Devi. What makes this temple distinctive is the presence of a sub-deity named "Ali," believed to have been a Muslim magician. According to legend, Chammundi Devi protected her devotees from the harmful magic and arrogance of Ali. She is said to have defeated and killed him, removing a powerful magical amulet he wore. After his defeat, Devi instructed that a shrine be built in his honour within the temple more complex. Unlike most temples, there are no daily rituals performed here. Instead, a special Samkramam Pooja is conducted on the eve of each Malayalam month. The temple is open to people of all castes and religions, symbolising a spirit of inclusivity and devotion.
