Chandanakkavu Pillayar Kovil and Mutharamman Temple is a prominent shrine located in the heart of Alappuzha town, Kerala. Dedicated to Lord Ganapathi and Goddess Mutharamman, the temple has its origins linked to the Saiva Vellalars who migrated from Tamil Nadu in ancient times. The idol of Lord Ganesha was brought from the Sankaranainar Kovil in Tirunelveli by one of the early settlers. Initially, a small temple was built near the seashore at Purakkad, but it was eventually destroyed by the sea. In response, the settlers approached the King of Champakaserry, who granted them three acres of land to construct a new temple. The temple initially enshrined only
more Lord Ganapathi, but later the Saiva Vellalars also consecrated Goddess Mutharamman, their kula devata (family deity). The temple also houses guardian deities Madasamy and Bhairava Swamy.
