Sree Pazhanchira Devi Temple

History

This temple is situated in Ananthapuri by the side of Kovalam road on the 'Paravankunnu'. According to the belief of the people it is almost 700 years old and was installed by a 'Siddha yogi' who worshipped the Devi. Gradually this place was converted into a temple and a place was given to the Yogi on the western side of the Sree Kovil. There is a 'Sarpa Kavu', outside the Sree Kovil where there are many shady trees 'Naga pooja' is performed here. It is said that those who witness this pooja will be cured of diseases of the eyes, skin etc. On every full more moon day, a special pooja known as 'Ayswarya Mahalakshmi Pooja is conducted in the Pazhanchira Devi temple. The pooja begins at 5 in the evening and ends at 6 p.m. This is performed for the removal of all ill effects and for the prosperity of the family. The festival of the temple is in the month of 'Meenam and starts on the day of 'Makayram'. On the 5th day of the festival, special poojas are performed for the Naga Devatas on the day of 'Ayilyam'. The people belonging to the 'Pulluvan' family come from the North and draw beautiful pictures of the Naga Devatas using coloured powder (Kalam). Men taking 'Vratam' sit in the Kalam and make movements like Snakes and bless the devotees with 'Prasadam'. It’s a real wonder that real Snakes visit the naga kalam as soon as it is drawn. This unique occurrence attracts devotees from all over the state. On the 6th day is the Sree Bhoota Bali. This ceremony is very auspicious. It is conducted at night at 1 a.m. The 'Melshanti' dresses up as the Devi. All the different Bhavas of the Devi as Bhadrakali, Saraswati, Chamundi etc are expressed by him. 7th day is Pooram Day and on that day Pongala Nivedyam is offered to the Devi. Ladies from different parts of the country come here to make this offering. Whatever the climatic conditions they will reach the temple. This temple is known as Mookambika of Trivandrum. Navarathri is celebrated with auspicious Poojas and Homas etc. On the Mahanavami day, Kanyakapooja is done by worshipping young girls and presenting them with dresses and gifts. On this day Samooha Leksharchana is conducted which is attended by thousands of devotees. On Vidyarambam day hundreds of children have their Vidhyarambam in the Temple. Different Poojas during the Navaratri festival for the fulfilment of various desires of devotees are as follows: 1st day: For removing obstacles for Papashanti etc - Pavamana Homam, Mahaganapati Homam and Ganapathi Upanishad Homam. 2nd day: For removal of sins committed during the past times - Sukrta Homam. 3rd day: For the removal of evil effects of the planets in horoscopes - Navagraha Shanti Homam. 4th day: To remove family disputes and to achieve peace and unity in the family. Samvadasukta Homam, Aikyamatya Sukta Homam. 5th day: "Mrityunjaya homam" and 'Dhara' is conducted for long life and removal of diseases etc. 6th day: 'Sree Sukta homam' is conducted for prosperity, removal of poverty, success in business etc. 7th day: 'Purushasukta home for progeny fulfilment of various desires. 8th day: Durgasukta homam to remove fear and get rid of enemies. 9th day: Shanti homam for world peace and peace of mind. 10th day: Chandika Havana Homam with 'Poornakuti' those who pray here on this day will have all their desires fulfilled. There is Samooha Laksharchana, Kanyaka pooja and Samooha Sadhya. The Navaratri festival comes to an end with all these various poojas mentioned above.
