Ayyarvattom Sree Maha Sudharshana Temple

History

Ayyarvattom Sree Maha Sudarshana Temple, located in Eravannur near Narikkuni in Kozhikode district, is a unique and revered shrine dedicated to Lord Sudarshana, the divine discus of Lord Vishnu, who is worshipped here in the form of Lord Vishnu himself. Alongside Sudarshana Bhagavan, Chamundi Devi is also enshrined and venerated with equal prominence. The temple draws devotees from across the country, many of whom offer prayers and offerings with faith in the deity’s power to fulfil their wishes. A defining strength of the temple is the unwavering support and active involvement of devotees and the local community. Hundreds of worshippers visit the temple daily, and during festival more periods, this number rises to thousands. Sundays witness especially large gatherings, and devotees often sponsor breakfast as offerings. Participating in Annadhanam (community feast) and feeding at least one person during these auspicious days is considered a highly virtuous act. The temple is believed to be over 4,000 years old, though there are differing views about its ancient patrons. Some say it was under the rule of the Porlathiri Raja, while others believe it was under the Kurumbanad Raja. According to local tradition, kings once worshipped Lord Sudarshana, considered not only a preserver but also a destroyer of evil, to seek divine blessings for victory in war, and they are said to have triumphed with his grace.
