This temple is at Porkalengad, Kunnamkulam in Thrissur district. It is only an hour's drive from the famous Guruvayoor temple. This is one of the rare temples for the Ashta Maha Nagas. In ancient times, this place was a dense forest where sunlight would not penetrate to the ground even at noon. As there were also some streams which provided water at all times, people used to bring their animals here for grazing. As they dozed under the trees, they used to hear someone playing music. But they could never find out who was playing the music. They also noticed that sometimes someone had milked
more some of the cows. At one time, only two ladies were left in the Idamanyoor illam, which stood near this temple. They offered the land to Sree Guruvayoorappan. Then that place became the Goshala of the Guruvayoor temple. The temple has Ashta Maha Nagas with Naga Raja and Nag Yakshi considered as Lord Siva and Goddess Parvathy, Rakteswari and Manikandan, an adjunct of lord Siva, consecrated with equal importance. The temple is open for worship on the second Sunday of the month. Later, the land and the temple came to the Cheerath family. As they found it difficult to look after the affairs of the temple, a committee of local people was formed.
