History

Vettakkorumakan Temple is an ancient shrine situated near the Nilambur Bus Stand, on the western bank of the Chaliyar River in the Malappuram district of Kerala. The Malabar region, renowned for its rich natural heritage and spiritual legacy, is home to numerous historic temples, with the Vettakkorumakan Temple being a notable example. Believed to have been established in the 18th century, the temple is dedicated to Vettakkorumakan, a popular warrior deity in Kerala's folklore. It serves not only as a sacred place of worship but also as a cultural and historical landmark, attracting devotees, history enthusiasts, and tourists interested in Kerala's ancient traditions. With more its proximity to the river and central location in Nilambur, the temple offers a serene and spiritually uplifting experience, making it a significant destination in Kerala’s pilgrimage circuit. The Malabar Rebellion of 1921 caused damage to the temple. Currently, the activities of the temple are taken care of by the Nilambur Kovilakam (the Nilambur Royal Family).
