Sree Punnamparambu Bhagavathy Temple

History

Sree Punnamparambu Naliseri Bhagavathy Temple is a revered Hindu shrine located at Punnamparambu in Mannampatta village, nestled between Kadampazhipuram and Sreekrishnapuram in Thrissur district, Kerala. This ancient temple, also known as one of the oldest Kavu in the Valluvanad region, is believed to be over 1400 years old, based on local folklore that links its origin to a pilgrimage by a Namboothiri scholar from Pariyaanampetta Manakkal. The presiding deity of the temple is Goddess Bhagavathy. Sub-deities include Lord Veerabhadran and the Nagas. Built in the traditional Kerala style, the temple maintains age-old customs and rituals typical of Bhagavathy temples. The temple is renowned for its vibrant annual festival, more celebrated in the Malayalam month of Makaram, famously known as Punnamparambu Pooram. This grand event features traditional melam, various temple art forms, colourful processions, decorative tableaux, and caparisoned elephants. Another major festival is Thalappoli, observed in Dhanu Masam, which includes the rituals of Thira and Pongala. Other important celebrations at the temple include Navratri, Thrikarthika, and the annual Prathishta festival, also held in Makaram. Sree Punnamparambu Naliseri Bhagavathy Temple remains a vibrant spiritual centre, preserving centuries-old traditions and continues to be a significant part of the region's cultural heritage.
