Located in Muhamma, Alappuzha
district, the Aryakkara Devi Temple has a rich historical background. During
the reign of the Edappally kings, around A.D. 1540, two women from the
Edappally royal family migrated to Muhamma following internal family disputes. The elder of the two married a young man from the Nair family named
Kayikkarakkotta, who served as a bill collector for the Edappally kings and had
been granted landlord status. The younger woman married a man from the Ezhava
community, belonging to the Ooralissery family. In recognition, the king
awarded 169 acres of land to the latter family in the Aryakkara region.
