Palakkunnu Sree Bhagavathy Temple

History

Palakkunnu Sree Bhagavathy Temple, one of North Kerala’s most prominent spiritual and cultural centres, is located in Kasaragod district, near Kottikulam Railway Station and 3 km from Bekal Fort. Dedicated to the mother goddess Bhagavathi, the deity is worshipped in two forms – Mootha Bhagavathy (Durga) and Elaya Bhagavathy (Saraswathy) – along with other deities like Vishnumoorthi and Ghantakarnan. The temple is renowned for its inclusive nature, welcoming people of all faiths and castes, and is celebrated for its rare and traditional rituals. Major festivals include Bharani Mahotsavam, noted for vibrant processions and fireworks, Poora Mahotsavam, featuring the folk art Poorakkali, and Kalamkanippu Mahotsavam, where thousands of more women offer food to the goddess in a ritual similar to Attukal Pongala. The temple also plays a key role in social welfare. Managed by the Kshetra Bharana Samithi since 1958, it runs educational institutions, a dance and music school, the Ambika Library, and provides scholarships and medical aid. Devotee committees in the UAE and Bahrain, as well as seafarers' associations, contribute to its development. The temple stands as a symbol of devotion, culture, and community service in the region.
