Iravil Sree Mahavishnu Temple

History

This temple is at Kanjangadu in Kasargod district. The idol that is consecrated here was obtained when the forest was being cleared at Chonkulam.  It is believed that this idol was once worshipped by Rishis. The temple was destroyed during the invasion by the forces under Tippu Sultan. The idol and the pedestal on which it had been fixed were left in the pond. As they were recovered without any damage, the re-consecration was performed with the same idol. The idol is in the form of the Lord as he appeared to his mother, Devaki, in the prison where he was born. The idol is believed more to be more than 3000 years old. This temple is frequented by those seeking a cure for diseases affecting small children. Many sculptures on wood decorate this temple. Dashavatharam and Sree Krishna leela are sculptured above the mandapam.
