Ayayil Kariyilakulangara Bhagavathy Temple

History

This temple is on the banks of the Neyyar River, 1km north of Aruvippuram in Thiruvananthapuram district. It is around 300 years old. A legend about the temple refers to an incident that happened in the 9th century, during the invasion by Mukilan. A Namboothiri lady had to leave home under tragic circumstances. She came to a house next to the place where the temple stands today. She had an idol of the Goddess which she used to worship. That place later became a hermitage. Six families of the area came together to build the temple for the goddess. There is a temple tank more and a kavu near it.  The idol that is consecrated here today is believed to contain the one that Aaya (lady) had worshipped. That is why the place is referred to as Ayayil. Sree Narayana Gurudevan used to pass this temple when he went to meditate at Thathamala Kalluvarambath. He sometimes rested there, and then people would gather to listen to him. He once mentioned the importance of this temple and predicted that the area would develop with the blessings of the Goddess.
