Padayanivettom Devi Temple

History

Padayanivettom Devi Temple is an ancient Hindu temple located in Vallikunnam, in the Mavelikkara taluk of Alappuzha district, Kerala. It is situated approximately 10 km south of Mavelikkara and 9 km east of Ochira, near National Highway 47. With a history spanning centuries, the temple holds significant cultural and spiritual importance in the region. In earlier times, the worship of Kalari Deva was prevalent among rural communities, and rituals such as Padayani, Thottam Pattu, and Kalamezhuthu Pattu were commonly performed to invoke divine blessings. During one such Padayani celebration, a group of devotees reportedly witnessed two divine female figures in the torchlight. This mysterious vision quickly became the more subject of local discussion. To understand the phenomenon, a Devaprashna (astrological inquiry) was conducted. It revealed the presence of Sree Durga Devi and Sree Bhadra Devi in the area, confirming that the two divine apparitions were indeed these goddesses. Based on this revelation, it was decided to establish temples in their honour. Since the divine vision occurred during Padayani, the place came to be known as Padayanivettom.
