Ganapathivattam Ganapathy Temple

History

Sree Maha Ganapathy Temple, located in the historic town of Sulthan Bathery in Wayanad, is one of the region’s most ancient and revered temples. Built over eight centuries ago, the temple stands as a significant cultural and spiritual landmark. It is widely believed that Sultan Bathery was originally known as Ganapathivattam, named after this very temple. The temple has a deep historical connection. In 1766, during Tipu Sultan’s invasion of the Malabar region, the original structure of the Maha Ganapathy Temple was destroyed. In 1975, the temple was renovated, and the idol of Lord Ganapathy was reinstalled through a re-consecration ceremony. Today, the temple is jointly maintained more by the Adivasi and Chetti communities of Wayanad, preserving its age-old traditions and spiritual significance.
