Valarkkavu Sree Durga Bhagavathi Temple is an ancient and revered shrine located in Valarkkavu, Thrissur district, Kerala. Dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali, the temple is known for its classic Kerala-style architecture, featuring a traditional sreekovil (sanctum sanctorum), chuttambalam (enclosed hall), and a serene temple pond. The temple’s history is steeped in legend and mythology, tracing back to the Dvapara Yuga. It is believed that the Pandavas, along with Draupadi, once stayed in the region during their exile. Before departing, the Pandavas are said to have gifted an idol of Goddess Durga to the local tribal chief. Unfamiliar with the proper rituals and modes of worship, the tribal people
more are believed to have invoked the Goddess in a more fierce and powerful form, leading to the establishment of the temple at what is now Valliyamkavu. In later years, worship at the site was formalised when Vanchipuzha Thamburan, a local ruler, granted official permission for rituals and allocated land for the construction of the temple. Today, Valarkkavu Sree Durga Temple stands as a prominent spiritual centre, attracting devotees who seek the blessings of the fierce yet protective Goddess Bhadrakali.
