Arpookara Subramanya Swami Temple

History

Arpookara Sree Subramanya Swami Temple is a renowned and spiritually vibrant temple located in the Kottayam district, Kerala. Dedicated primarily to Lord Subrahmanya (Murugan), the temple is a peaceful and serene place of worship, easily accessible from the main road with ample parking facilities. In addition to the main deity, the temple also houses idols of Lord Vishnu, Dakshinamurthy, Lord Shastha, Ganapathi, and a Rakshas (guardian spirit). A peacock, sacred to Lord Subrahmanya, is also present on the temple premises. The temple features an Ootupura (traditional dining hall), adding to its traditional architectural charm. One of the most significant days at the temple is Shashti, observed every more month with great devotion. The temple holds the unique distinction of being the only one in the world to feature a depiction of Shadchakra Ganapathy, with daily Naivedya (offerings) and rituals conducted in his honour. Koothambalam (traditional temple theatre) here is another rare feature—it is said to be the only open Koothambalam in India. This sacred space is adorned with three-dimensional sculptures narrating the Ramayana, a visual and spiritual masterpiece. The temple’s outer Sreekovil (sanctum) walls are decorated with world-famous mural paintings, further adding to the cultural and artistic significance of the temple.
