Thiruvanath Sreekrishna Temple
is a historic and culturally significant shrine located in Ayyanthole, in the
Thrissur district of Kerala. Dedicated to Lord Sree Krishna, the temple once
stood as a spiritual centre under the patronage of the Kezhakiniyedathu Mana, a
distinguished Namboothiri family. Temple history is deeply intertwined with
regional politics and resistance. The Kezhakiniyedathu family famously allied
with the Samoothiri (Zamorin) of Kozhikode against the rule of the Kochi king.
In retaliation, the Kochi king seized their properties, leaving the temple
abandoned and neglected for many years. Adding to its turbulent past, the
temple was later looted and destroyed during the invasions of Tipu Sultan. The

lay in ruins near the estate of Appan Thampuran. In a remarkable act of
devotion and preservation, Appan Thampuran recovered the idol of Sri Krishna
from a nearby pond. He financed the temple’s restoration and
performed the Jeernodharana (ritual renewal), spending a sum of ₹30,000—a
substantial amount at the time. Although he had hoped for reimbursement from
the government, the support never came. Today, Thiruvanath Sreekrishna Temple
stands not only as a sacred place of worship but also as a testament to
resilience, sacrifice, and the enduring power of faith through Kerala’s storied
history.
