Nalukulangara Maha Devi Temple

History

It is believed that thousands of years ago, a set of brahmins left Karnataka and came to Paraveli at Pattanakadu in Cherthala after a difference of opinion over the division of ancestral property. The Karthas of Thuruthykadu, who were prominent landlords and local people, welcomed them. Later, there was a drought in the area, and the local people appealed to the brahmins, whom they considered as in possession of special powers. At that time, a mendicant resplendent in appearance came to them from the south. After listening to the problem they faced, he consecrated the idol of Sree Bhadrakali, whom he had with him more in a small hut constructed near the Kothakulam. Later, after the performance of Navaham, etc, he consecrated the idol in the centre between Dharma Shastha and Annapoorneswari Devi in the Kothakulangara Dharma Shastha temple. Immediately, it started raining. Later, the local devotees started living in Athirthikulangara in Thuravoor, Nalukulangara in Parayakadu and Pattukulangara in Kuthiyathodu. They built temples in all these places. The four goddesses were considered sisters. The brahmins who were conducting the rituals then left for their native place. In the Malayalam era 940-41, Dharmaraja Karthika Thirunal Ramavarma, the King of Travancore, issued orders assigning temples to the local people.  So, the Kartha family left the temple under the care of the local people.
