Murikkumpuzha Bhagavathy Temple

History

Murikkumpuzha Bhagavathy Temple is located in Pala, Kottayam district, near the banks of the Meenachil River. It is believed to have been the Kalari Paradevatha (guardian deity) of the Asan (Kalari master) in ancient times. In earlier days, the Kalari structure housed deities Bhadrakali and Raktheshwari at the southwest and northeast corners. Though the original structure was later demolished, new shrines were constructed, and consecrations were performed by the Bhadrakali Mattappally Thanthri. The temple also includes shrines for Yakshi, Kshethrapalan, and serpent deities (Nagas). A three-day annual festival is celebrated in the Malayalam month of Makaram, from Revathi to Bharani. Other important occasions include Mandala Bhajana and Vishu, more when a vibrant Kumbhakudam procession arrives from various nearby centres. The temple is administered by the NSS Karayogam and features ample parking and scenic surroundings, making it a place worth visiting.
