Pattathil Madam Temple

History

The Pattathil family consists of five branches: Nedumpuram, Kochumadam, Vallyatt, Thayathil and Chitayankatt. The Pattathil family is at Katakkarappally village in Cherthala Taluk. The members of the family stay around the family temple. Legends say that at one time long ago, there lived a mother, two daughters and a son in very poor financial circumstances.  The son left the house in desperation. As he sat under a tree eating a fruit, some Namboothiris coming back after the Murajapam in Thiruvananthapuram saw him. They noticed the mark of the conch and discussed under his feet and realised that he was destined for greater things. So they took more him to their house. He was educated well by the Namboothiris. Later, he wanted to meet his mother and sisters. The Namboothiris allowed him to do so and also gave him enough wealth to get his sisters married and for his own future life. He came to be known as Eravi Raman, the first senior householder of the family. The descendants of his sisters became members of the family. According to another legend, the Nedumpuram branch of the family was once a Mana of the Namboothiris. As the last man of that Mana had no children from his wife from his caste, he gave all his wealth to the Nair wife and children. The places, including the Kizhakke Kottaram, were under the Edappally Swaroopam. Representatives would be sent from the Swaroopam to collect taxes. The Kizhakke Kottaram Ayyappa temple was built for them to worship, and a palace was made on the southern side as well as a dining hall on the northern side. During the time of Padmanabhan Mamman as the head of the family, some land was obtained from the Travancore King Marthandavarma and the temple was built there for the sake of the local people too. The members of the family were given the title of Karthav. There is no idol consecrated at the Madam. The effulgence of the Goddess is on the Thali on the lamp in the sanctum.
