Valiya Panayannarkavu Bhagavathy Temple

History

Parumala is situated on the Mavelikkara – Thiruvalla route and Chengannoor – Mannar route via Puliyoor about 1.5 km from Parumalakkadavu. It is also 100 mts from the Thikkapuzha Junction on the Chengannoor – Mannar route via Pandanad. The temple is ideally located on the banks of the holy River Pamba. The temple is considered to be very old and one of the rare temples where presiding deities Siva and Bhagavathy are in the same temple. According to mythology, this temple is believed to have been constructed during Dwapara Yuga by the great Maharshi Parasurama, Durvasavu and Narada on the advice of Goddess Parvathy duly raising more this land. The responsibility for the construction was undertaken by Parasurama and on completion of Siva temple, Sivalingam was consecrated by Parasurama himself with his own hands having darshan towards the Western direction. Along with this, Maharshi Durvasavu and Narada consecrated the idols of Sree Bhagavathy, Kali, Saptha Mathrukkal (Seven Mothers), Veerabhadran, Ganapathy, Soolinee (totalling eighteen in the great gopuram on the East-West direction). Outside the sanctum sanctorum, the idols of Karimkali, Bhoothamkali, Kodumkali, and Durga Devi in palliyara were also installed. Bhadrakali, the most powerful deity with the face after killing the demon Dharika is facing the East and the doors never open. The poojaris perform prayers by sitting on the right side of Meruchakram. Chanthabhishekam, Raktha Pushpanjali etc are performed on and before the Bhadrakali facing north. After conducting Devaprasna sub deities Ganapathy, Dharmasastha, Rakshas, Yakshi etc are also installed. Another important story is that of Yakshi who escaped from Kadamattathu Kathanar, a Christian Priest who was a mantrikan. The Yakshi gave a lot of trouble to people around the Malayinkeezh forest near Trivandrum and in order to save people Kadamattathu Kathanar enslaved the Yakshi. But the Yakshi escaped from the priest and finally begged pardon before Bhadrakali who saved her from Kathanar and allowed her to live on a palm tree. On hearing the history and on the assurance of Bhagavathy, Kathanar returned. There are five Kavus around the temple considered to be very old and grew along with the construction of this temple. Nagaraja, Nagayakshi and their families are residing there. The Kavu spreads over about five acres and is very favourite for nature lovers. The important offerings are Kuthiyottam, Guruthi, Noorum Palum, Chanthattam, Kaivettaka Guruthi, Sathrusamhara Pooja etc. Devotees from far and near irrespective of caste and religion throng here to worship and to get blessings. Festivals like Vijayadasami, Nalpathyonnu, Sivarathri etc are enthusiastically celebrated. The most important among these is Vishu falling in the month of April. The present thanthri of the temple is the famous Thiruvalla Parampoorillathu Bhrahmasree Thrivikraman Narayana Bhattathiri and the main poojari of the temple is Subrahmanian Namboothiri. This temple and its properties belong to the Kottarathil Padinjattedathu family. The members of this family are known as Adisser. Marumakka-them is still being followed and administration is done according to a bye-law by a committee elected by the members.
