Sree Dharma Shasta Temple, located in Vandiperiyar, Idukki district, stands on the very site where Manavikrama Pandyan is believed to have been aided by a mysterious sixteen-year-old boy during a fierce battle with dacoits. This boy is said to be none other than Dharma Shasta, more widely known as Lord Ayyappa. During his journey from Tamil Nadu in search of a suitable place to settle, the king initially chose the banks of the Periyar River. However, following the divine guidance of Ayyappa, who had rescued him, he soon moved on, recognising the area as inauspicious. Years later, Manavikrama Pandyan returned to the spot where the miraculous encounter
more had taken place, purchased the land, and constructed a temple dedicated to Ayyappa. It is believed that this same deity eventually merged into the idol of the Sabarimala Temple near the Pampa River. Now over a thousand years old, the temple is built in the traditional Tamil architectural style and is nestled amid the serene hills and tea estates of Vandiperiyar. Rich in legend, the temple is a place of deep spiritual significance. One such tale speaks of a mystical stone hidden in a nearby tea estate, said to be guarded by a wrathful boar that punishes any disrespect shown to the site. The presiding deity is considered to have attained enlightenment and is believed to grant moksha (liberation) to sincere devotees. The temple also houses shrines for Subramanya, Bhagavathy, and Ganesha. It is administered by members of the Poonjar Royal Family under the Poonjar Koickal Devaswom. Vandiperiyar lies about 70 kilometres from Poonjar and is close to popular tourist destinations such as Kumily, Thekkady, and Gavi. The renowned Sabarimala Temple is just 25 kilometres away and can be accessed by road or on foot through the forest. Special permits are required for trekking through the forest route, and our temple manager can assist with the necessary arrangements.
