Eramam Sree Bhadrakali Temple

History

This temple is at Eramam in Muppathadam of Ernakulam district. The temple is more than 600 years old. In those days, there was a colony of Pulayas in Muppathadam where the workers belonging to a Namboothiri illam stayed and worked on the farm. They had a crudely fashioned Pathi where they offered worship.  In those days, it was customary for a few women from the Pulaya community who worked for one illam to be sent with a girl who got married and was sent to another illam. Thus, a few women were sent to Kalladikodu in Palakkad when a Namboothiri girl from the Muppathadam illam more was married and shifted to Palakkad. Among them were Ayyambadath Charungala and Edatt Kurumba. In the illam at Palakkad, Goddess Bhadrakali was consecrated in the attic. Though these women were not allowed to enter the house, they prayed ardently to this goddess. They kept a stone under a banyan tree to represent the goddess and worshipped her in their way. Very soon, the goddess attained great power. As time passed and the two women were sent back as they had become too old to work, they sincerely invited the goddess to come with them. When they reached the colony at Muppathadam, they kept a stone at the Pathi to represent the goddess, thinking of the goddess at Kodungaloor. Later, when the land of the Namboothiri was taken over by Muslims for cultivation, they shifted the Pulaya colony to Eramam. At first, they used to offer alcohol, meat and kill cocks and goats on the day of Pathaamudayam. Later, this worship was given up, and the temple was built.  At Palakkad, where the two women had kept a stone to worship the Goddess, there is a temple for Her named Sathram Kavu. This is considered the original position of Eramathil Bhagavathy.
