Ponadu Bhagavathy Temple

History

This temple is at Ponad at Karoor in Kottayam district. It is more than a thousand years old. It is just 100m from the Pala- Chakkampuzha- Ramapuram route. The temple stands on land measuring up to 1 acre and 80 cents. There is a Gopram on the main road. In the beginning, only Goddess Bhadrakali was consecrated in a sanctum. In the astrological consultation held in 1995, it was seen that Goddess Bhadra and Goddess Durga were to be consecrated with equal importance in two sancta in the same premises. So, a new temple was built with two sancta facing east and equipped with a surrounding more wall and an anapanthal. Subordinate deities are Moolapithru, Chamundi, Rakshass, Serpent and Yakshi. There are two ponds in the temple. Onam, Vinayaka Chathurthi, Aayilya Sarppa Pooja in the month of Kanni, Navarathri, Kalamezhuthu Pattu during Mandala period in Vrischikam, culminating with Guruthy, are observed. A festival of three days, Aswathy, Bharani and Karthika in the month of Meenam is celebrated with Pongala on the first day, Kalam karikkal on the first and second days, and Choottu padayani on the day of star Bharani. The day of consecration is on the star Uthram in the month of Mithunam. Special offerings like Vattaka guruthy, Ganapathy homam, Katum payasam, Itichu pizhinja arunazi payasam are offered apart from the common ones. The temple is managed by Ponad Devi Vilasam NSS Karayogam No.844.
