Cheranalloor Siva Temple

History

Cheranalloor Siva Temple, located in East Cheranalloor, Ernakulam, is one of the 108 revered Siva temples of Kerala. The presiding deity, Lord Siva, is worshipped in his ascetic form, and as a result, offerings such as fragrant flowers and incense sticks are forbidden. Once a prosperous temple with extensive land holdings, it used to receive approximately 24 tons of paddy annually. However, due to agrarian reforms, the temple lost most of its land, retaining only a few acres where it stands today. Over time, the temple has faced decline and is now struggling for survival. This 300-year-old temple was roofed with tiles about a century ago. Historical more records indicate the presence of Gurukkal families around the temple, suggesting that it existed before the involvement of "Ambalavasis" like Nambiars, Sharodys, and Marars in temple administration. Traditionally, Gurukkals held a key role in temple management, performing duties now undertaken by Ambalavasis. The temple is easily accessible from Kalady and Perumbavoor, attracting devotees seeking the blessings of Lord Siva.
