Azhakam Durga Devi Temple

History

Situated in Azhakam village near Kodakara in Thrissur district, Kerala, the Azhakam Durga Devi Temple, also known as Vellithatt Azhakam Devi Temple, is one of the 108 sacred Durga temples in the state. The presiding deity is worshipped in the form of a virgin (kanya sankalpam), and the sanctum sanctorum (vatta sreekovil) faces west. Built of granite in a circular style, the shrine houses a stone idol of the Goddess in chaturbahu (four-armed) form, holding a conch (shankh) and discus (chakra). The idol stands 2.5 feet tall, excluding the pedestal. Though there is no idol of Lord Ayyappa, the belief is that the Ayyappa worshipped at more Chottanikkara resides here in an invisible form. The temple is currently managed by a local committee.
