Kodumbu Subramanya Swamy
Temple, located in the village of Kodumba in Palakkad district, is one of the
oldest temples dedicated to Lord Murugan in Kerala. Situated about 10
kilometres southeast of Palakkad and southwest of Coimbatore, the temple lies
in the serene valley of the Soka Nasini River. Devotees believe that bathing in
this river washes away sorrow, giving it a special spiritual significance. The
temple is often regarded as a spiritual counterpart to the famed Palani Murugan
Temple. Its origin is deeply tied to the history of the Sengunthar Kaikola
Mudaliyar community. During the Vijayanagara period, oppressive taxes forced
many Tamil weavers to migrate from Kanchipuram
more
to Kodumbu, where they
established a thriving weaving industry. They regularly travelled by cow-drawn
carts to sell their textiles in nearby Avinashi, returning with materials for
future production. On one such journey back from Avinashi, the weavers heard a
mysterious voice call out, “I am coming, I am coming.” Surprised and unsettled,
they stopped but saw no one. As they prepared to continue, their cows refused
to move. The voice echoed once more. Upon searching the area, they discovered a
radiant, glowing stone hidden among the bushes. Struck by its divine aura, they
placed the stone in one of their bundles—and immediately, the cows began moving
again. Once back in Kodumbu, the weavers enshrined the sacred stone within a Shiva
temple and began worshipping it as Subramanya Swamy, their Kuladevata (family
deity). The temple has remained a centre of devotion for generations, standing
as a testament to faith, tradition, and divine encounter.
