Nottanalukkal Temple

History

This temple is at Kuttipuram in Malappuram district. Legend connects this temple with Kalladikodan Nottan who belonged to the Mannan tribal group. He was an ardent devotee of the Goddess. Once when he was crossing the river during the rains, the current became too strong and he was in danger. As he prayed to the Goddess, he was able to catch hold of a branch of a banyan tree. Clinging on to that he came out of the river. In gratitude, he planted the banyan branch there invoking the Goddess. Later the platform was destroyed. Some of the local people who realised the presence of the more Goddess’s effulgence there built a temple and consecrated her as the mild form of Bhadrakali. Devi, Ganapathy, Nottanswamy and Ayyappan are consecrated as subordinate deities. The festival is conducted by the Mannan community and the Thandaan community has a prominent role in bringing honey for the festival. A committee of local people looks after the management of the temple.
