The temple is near Ponkunam in Kottayam district, on the Punalur - Muvattupuzha state highway. It is believed to have been built 800 years ago. The history of the temple since it came to be under the Edapally Royal family is available. After that local chieftains and the local NSS Karayogam had control over it. Later it came to be under a committee representing all the Hindus of the area. The Lord is consecrated as the householder, holding the pot of nectar in his hand. The forest deities of Sabarimala, Chakkiparamala and Thalaparamala are consecrated on the eastern entrance of the temple. Ganapathy, Anthimahakalan and Aylakshy
more are consecrated as subordinate deities. Malikapurathamma, Serpents, Rakshass, Velichapadu and Kavalyakshi are also consecrated in the temple. The temple has been restored with repairs and additional buildings recently.
