This temple is situated at Chendamangalam, near Paravur in Ernakulam district. It is one of the most famous 108 Siva temples in Kerala. Legends say that the idol is self-originated. But others say that it was consecrated by Lord Parasurama. It is believed to be more than 2000 years old. The temple is built according to the Kerala Dravida architectural tradition in about 6 acres of land. The temple is near the Periyar river with the sanctum facing the east. One speciality of the temple is the presence of three Ganapathy idols under the banyan tree in front of the temple. Devotees worship here and take permission
more to worship Mahadeva. Nagas are also consecrated nearby. There are six subordinate deities in separate sancta. Durga Bhagavathy and two forms of Lord Siva, Akhoramoorthy and Dakshinamoorthy are on the southern side and Mahavishnu, Brahma and Bhrumgeerati, one of the main adjuvants of Lord Siva, are on the northern side. Devotees believe that problems among family members can be solved by worshipping in this temple. The temple also has the fame of being the venue for the Paliyam Satyagraham to seek permission for the lower castes to enter the temples.
