Kurissimala Lord Siva Temple

History

This temple is at Kavilpadu in Palakkad. In ancient days Kurichimala was a dense forest. Along with the wild animals and the snakes, there also lived the Rishis under the protection of Sree Hanuman Swamy. Rishi Kurichyaan was the chief among them who observed penance there to please Lord Mahadeva. The Lord, pleased with his penance, appeared before him on the day of Shivarathri. The blessing that the Rishi asked of the Lord was to be present at that spot with his family so that people could live there without fear.  As the Lord gave the blessing and disappeared the Rishi worshipped the place where the Lord’s more feet had touched the ground. Then the other Rishis there consecrated a Shivalingam on the hill and started worshipping it. Vanadurga, the Goddess of the Forest was pleased and soon the wild animals left the area. The Rishis started cultivation of the land and stayed there. Lord Hanuman was also present to protect the people. As Rishi Kurichyaan had performed penance here, the hill came to be known as Kurichyaan Mala. The subordinate deities are Parvathy Devi, Balaganapathy, Balamurugan, Sree Anjaneyaswami, Serpents and Sapthamathrukkal.
