Kuttumukku Sree Mahadeva Temple

History

Kuttumukku Sree Mahadeva Temple, dedicated to Lord Kuttumukku Sree Mahadevan, is situated approximately 5 km northeast of Thrissur. The presiding deity is worshipped in the form of "Kiratha Moorthi," a fierce and powerful incarnation of Lord Siva. According to Hindu mythology, it was in this form that Shiva tested Arjuna’s devotion by appearing as a hunter and engaging him in a duel. Pleased by Arjuna’s unwavering dedication, Shiva granted him the celestial weapon "Pasupathastra." A popular legend associated with the temple tells of an attack by the army of Mysore, led by Tipu Sultan. As they were about to breach the temple premises, a swarm of bees more mysteriously appeared and attacked the invaders, forcing them to retreat and leave the temple unharmed. Kuttumukku Siva Temple has been a place of worship for over 300 years, drawing devotees who seek blessings from this powerful manifestation of Lord Siva.
