Temple is situated near Iritty in the Kannur district on the Kottiyoor route. According to local legends, Puralimala, a striking and elevated hill, was once the central hub of the Chera kingdom. King Harishchandra Perumal is believed to have constructed a fort here, known as Harishchandra Fort, though no traces of the structure remain today. This historically significant site is closely linked to Pazhassi Raja, the "Lion of Kerala." It is said that the first revolutionary battle between Pazhassi’s forces and the British took place here, and he resided at Puralimala during the early stages of his revolt. more Lord Muthappan, stands here as a revered spiritual site. It is considered the Aroodasthanam (second abode) of Lord Muthappan, who is believed to have meditated in this sacred location for years. The temple’s annual festival, Thiruvappana Mahotsavam, is a two-day-long celebration featuring cultural performances throughout the day and night. The festival takes place in the Malayalam month of Kumbham (February-March). A key attraction in the area is the Puralimala Viewpoint, which offers breathtaking panoramic views of the valleys and the surrounding town, making it a must-visit destination.
