Mundayamparamba Temple

History

This temple is at Ayyankunnu panchayath, 10 km to the north east of Iritti in Kannur district. The area has rivers on three sides and is full of groves. The history and culture of this place is connected with Mundayamparambu Sree Tharakkumeethal Bhagavathy temple. In the ancient times there was the custom that no one should utter the name of the temple or the Goddess after mid-day. One legend says that this custom led to the place being called Mindaamparambu which later became Mundayamparambu. Another legend says that it is so called as it was the place where the Goddess killed Chanda and Munda, the demons. more The Goddess is worshipped as Valiya Thampuratty and Cheriya Thampuratty. Perumbeshan Daivam is also consecrated here. In the Aravilan Kavu near the temple is the place of Aravilan Daivam. Legend says that the effulgence that emanated from Kottiyoor Perumal for the destruction of the Asuras, came to be seated at Mundayamparambu. Three types of rituals are followed in this temple. In the main sanctum it is worship by the Brahmins. In the Tharakkumeethal, Kalladi performs the rituals.  In the Thazhe Kavu it is performed by the oracle. So, both Sathwika and Koula rituals are performed here. The ancestors must have given a form of the Goddess to the power found in the forest. Another peculiarity is that drums are not used for Theyyam or for other rituals. Melekavu (Tharakkumeethal), Keezhekavu, Aravilaan kavu, Narayani kavu, Panakara kavu and Olekavu are the important sacred groves surrounding the temple. Daily worship is not offered here. The temple is open during the Mandala period, on the first of every Malayalam month and for festivals.
