Located in Cherpu, Thrissur district, Changarayil Sree Narasimha Murti Temple has a history spanning over 800 years. The temple's origins are closely tied to the migration of 29 Illams, including Ayrilymana and Kannamangalath Mana, to Perumbillissery desam due to conflicts with the ruling authority of Palakkad. At that time, the temple was under the custodianship of Cheruvathoor Mana. The Cheruvathoor Mana family, originally from the Malappuram region, established strong business and martial alliances with several prominent families, including Kannamangalath Mana. Cheruvathoor Mana bestowed the Shri Narasimha Murti Temple upon Kannamangalath Mana as a wedding gift. An alternative account suggests that Eledathu Mana once owned the
more temple and was later acquired by Cheruvathoor Mana when Eledathu Mana faced financial hardship. During this period, the temple’s upkeep suffered, and the neglect of rituals is believed to have led to a massive fire that devastated the houses in front of the temple. In an attempt to appease the deity, locals brought an elephant to the temple, but the normally calm animal turned uncontrollable upon reaching the temple entrance. Since then, elephants have never been brought to the temple.
