Ottasekharamangalam Mahadevar Temple

History

Sree Mahadevar Temple is situated in Ottasekharamangalam, along the Kattakada Chembur  Vellara road in Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala. This ancient temple is unique for housing three principal deities two forms of Lord Shiva and one of Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu here is worshipped in the Mohini Avatar. The Vishnu murti was originally worshipped at Thengmanmadam and was installed in the temple during its renovation in 1915 AD. Initially, the temple's original Tantri opposed installing the Vishnu idol, leading to his replacement by Tantri Nelluvelil, who consecrated the deity as a four-armed Vishnu in the form of Mohini. At the temple's centre is a fierce form of Lord Shiva, more known as Aghora Murti, believed to have been consecrated by Khara Maharishi. This deity’s intense energy made it difficult to conduct rituals, prompting the construction of a second Shiva shrine, Thekkedam Temple, to absorb some of Aghora Shiva’s power. The temple follows a unique tradition where three local karas (regional divisions) bring three flagposts, and flags are installed on them by the temple’s Tantri.
