Sree Vettukunnathu Kavu Bhagavathy Temple

History

This temple is designed in such a way as to get the overwhelmed vigour of devotees who arrive for prayer. The minute figure of the God extends from the idol to the outer wall in Kodungalloor – Thrissur route at Karuvannur of Thrissur District situates this ancient Goddess temple. The sub-deities are Ganapathy, Sasthavu, Durga and Vishnu. The origin of this temple is related to some historic facts. During the invasion of Tippu Sultan a family from Tirur Vettathu Nadu (now Malappuram District) in fear of the military assault ran away and took a rest at Sankarathuparambu in Karuvannur of Trichur District. After a while when more they began to proceed on their journey they were not able to lift the ‘Olakuda’ (umbrella made with palm leaf) it is believed that the traditional Goddess who came with them for the protection of the family was on the umbrella and in remembrance to that they constructed a temporary temple at that place for their family deity. Later constructed this Vettukunnathukavu Temple as per all scientific calculations. This family who reached Vettathu Nadu was known as the Vettiyattil family and the temple was known as Vettukunnathukavu Bhagavathy temple. The then old, venerable person of the family (Karanavar) gave the right to rule the temple to Kuttanalloor Moothedathu Mana of Karuvannur in the belief that the temple's ruling by a Nair family is not good. Gradually the temple management came to Cochin Dvaswom Board and later to the hands of Vettukunnathukavu Group Devaswom Kshetra Samrakshana Samithy formed under Charitable and Societies act with No. 129/79 in 1979 by local devotees. There are four other temples under this Devaswom, namely, (1) Vettekattu Sree Mahavishnu Temple, Purathadu, Karuvannur (2) Tharakkal Sree Mahavishnu Temple, Karavannur (3) Njaramkulangara Sree Mahavishnu Temple, Karuvannur (4) Purathoor Sree Subramanya Swamy Temple, Prathissery. The basic connection between the vettiyattil family and this temple is clear from the functions like, the Parayedeuppu Samrppanam and the procession to the temple starts from the ‘Kottil’ of Vettiyattil Karanavar, Valluvan – the leader of the ‘Pothattam’ (running of Buffelos) is brought as a procession accompanied by a band from the Kalithar of Vettyattil family after poojas during Thiruvonam day of month Kanni, after Meda Bharani celebrations in the temple there is a ‘Kalasm’ (a ritual) in the Kottil of Vettiyattil Karanavars at the temple expense and the song connecting Goddess and Vettiyattil Karanavars etc. these events show the depth of connection between the temple and Vettiyattil family.‘Thattinmmelkali’, a rare traditional ritual, is conducted by Ezhava and Maracharya (people who make articles from wood) communities during Bharani festival as an offering. This temple is also having the credit of a rare festival, known as Pothottonam (running of Buffalos). It is celebrated as a main offering for cattle protection and agricultural prosperity during the Thiruvonam day of the month Kanni in the Malayalam calendar. This offering is done under the leadership of Vallon (the head of a community). The rectangular pillar where the Vallon seats during poothottam with eight feet in height and two feet in width known as Pothottakallu. Seven days before Thiruvonam the Pothottakallu and the surroundings are cleaned, which is the beginning of this rare offering. The buffalos who are ready to participate in the race are brought in a procession accompanied by a band and various festivities after the bath. When the procession reaches the main gate of the temple there is a special ceremony known as ‘Aarakkuka’. After this ceremony, the buffalos of the vettiyattil family and Thandan of the area run three times around the Pothottakallu. Followed by the buffalos of the farmers will run three times around the Pothottakallu and if any buffalo touches the stone then that person has to do a penalty and can have the buffalo as his own. The traditional art forms of Kuthirakali, Theyyam etc, are also conducted in this temple on Karthika star after Bharani festival day. Pathamudayam, Makara Chowa, Navarathri, Pana, Udayasthaman pooja, Kalabacharthu, Murajapam, Thrikalapooja etc, are also celebrated here. On the Bharani day of every month, there is Prasadaoottu (Annadanam). To increase the Goddes’ vigour and thus to attain prosperity for all beings in the world a Naveekarana Kalasam will be celebrated from 2005 March 6th to 16th at Vettukunnathukavu temple.
