Marayil Bhagavathy Temple

History

Located in Alangadu village, Paravur taluk, Ernakulam district, Koduvazhanga Marayil Sree Bhagavathy Temple is a revered place of worship with a history spanning approximately 600 years. The presiding deity is Marayil Bhagavathy, and Muthappan, who was brought as the Upaasana Moorthy of the Goddess, is also enshrined here. The temple also houses subordinate deities, including Shasthav, Ganapathy, Ghandaakarnan, and Yakshi. A unique offering, Kalasam, is performed for Muthappan every Tuesday and Friday, consisting of meat, Puttu, eggs, and Pappads. The temple shares a historical connection with the Chembola Temple. In earlier times, a sacred sword was ceremonially brought from there before the commencement of the temple festival. While more this tradition has ceased, offerings continue to be made at Chembola and Shivagiri. The temple's annual festival takes place in the month of Kumbham, beginning on the day of the Rohini star.
