Challissery saw a lot of destruction during the
raid by the army under Tipu Sultan. The Siva temple was also destroyed. It is
believed to be more than 1800 years old. Devotees believe that Maharshi Khara, a devotee of Mahadeva, consecrated it. The Sivalinga with the
platform on which it is seated measures four and a half feet in height. The
circumference also exceeds a man’s grip. Such idols are very rarely seen in
Kerala. Restoration work is going on.
