Thiruvullakkavu Sree Dharmasastha Temple

History

Thiruvullakkavu Sree Dharma Sastha Temple is one of Kerala’s earliest and ancient temples. It is situated 10 km south of Thrissur town on the Thrissur-Irinjalakuda route. Thiruvullakkavu is a throbbing beehive of spiritual activities today. Thousands bring their children to this temple for the initiation into the excitement of knowledge, that is Ezhuthiniruthal or Vidyarambham. The devotees believe that a child who starts on the alphabet at Thiruvullakkavu is sure to become a scholar. An unending stream of devotees flows to this temple on Vijayadasami the last and most auspicious day of the Navarathri festival for those who seek academic excellence. At Thiruvullakkavu, the presiding more deity is Dharmasastha, the divine protector of the people. But, here Sastha is the God of Knowledge. The presence of Thiruvullakkavu Sree Dharma Sastha is as Vedamoorthi and Vidyamoorthi. Because of this divine presence of Dharmasastha in Thiruvullakkavu the ceremony of initiation into writing became more important and popular. The famous poet and cinema lyricist P. Bhaskaran, poet Changampuzha, scholar N.V. Krishna Warrier, and playback singer P. Jayachandran are the eminent personalities who got the blessings of Thiruvullakkavu Sree Dharma Sastha by their initiation into the writing. In Thiruvullakkavu, Navarathri is the most important festival. On Vijayadasami day there is a great flow of devotees and thousands of children have their initiation into writing (Ezhuthiniruthal). During the Navarathri cultural festival, the budding artists want to debut at Thiruvullakkavu Temple. Successful professionals also long to perform here during these auspicious days. At Thiruvullakkavu all days a year are used to conduct the Holy Vidyarambham (Ezhuthiniruthal) except for two days. They are Mahanavami, the closing Pooja Day and Atham star in the Malayalam month of Meenam. On Atham star of Malayalam month Meenam,  Sastha will go to supervise his land and people - the Grama Bali in connection with the renowned Peruvanam Arattupuzha Pooram. The dynamic committee which includes the representatives of Kshethra Samrakshana Samithi and Peruvanam Grama Sabha is conducting the administration. Devaswom grants a scholarship for financially weak and academically efficient students of nearby panchayaths up to professional courses from SSLC. At Thiruvullakkavu, full-fledged accommodation facilities are available for devotees and pilgrims from outside. The main offerings are Saraswatha Pushpanjali and Kadalippazham for academic excellence. Placing the Naavu and Narayam (Symbol of tongue and writing instrument) is important to children for best talk and thought.
