Mangalam Ayyappankavu Temple

History

Mangalam Ayyappankavu Temple is situated in Mangalam village near Wadakkanchery in the Thrissur district of Kerala. The temple's annual festival is celebrated during the month of Makaram on the day of Uthram Nakshatra. This temple is one of the 108 Ayyappan Kavu temples in Kerala and is believed to be the Thalappullikavu mentioned in Thottam Pattu. Although widely known as an Ayyappa temple, it is thought that the Vishnu temple within the complex was built first. The Vishnu deity here is depicted with four hands (Chathur Bahu). The Ayyappa idol worshipped in the temple is unique, portraying the deity seated with his hands positioned backward Ayyappa here more is in the form of a Brahmachari (celibate). The temple also enshrines Upa Devatas, including Ganapathy and Rakshas. According to legend, this Ayyappa idol once served as the guardian deity of Kakkad Vattakottai. After the fort was destroyed, the idol was installed in its present location.
