Sree Chamundeshwari Temple in Thuruthikkara,
Kollam, is believed to have been built in the 12th century by the Hoysala
Dynasty. The temple’s towering structure was likely constructed in the 17th
century during the rule of the Vijayanagara Empire. In 1659, a grand staircase
with 1,000 steps was built to provide access to the hilltop where the temple
stands. Later, in 1664, Mysore Maharaja Dodda Devaraja Wodeyar installed a
massive granite Nandi at the site. The sanctum (Garbhagriha) of the temple
enshrines the deity Chamundeshwari, depicted with eight hands (Ashta Bhuja),
symbolizing her divine power and protection.
